Urfa Dry, dusty and hot- this is the way Urfa appears at first glance. When you get to know Urfa, you will find that it's known for a shady park with several pools and great religious significance, a richness of agricultural produce, a cool and inviting labyrinthine bazaar, and its great historical importance. According to local tradition allegedly based on the Quran, it is the birthplace of Abraham before his migration to Canaan, now Palestine.
Diyarbakir The Tigris (Dicle) River flows by the mighty black walls of Diyarbakir. Farming, stock raising, some oil prospecting and light industry fuel the Diyarbakir economy. The city prides itself especially on its watermelons. Traditional life continues nonetheless. Many of the men wear the traditional baggy trousers, and older women have black head coverings. The tawdry chaos of signs in the city's centre, the narrow alleys, the mosques in the Arab style with black and white banding in the stone - all those give Diyarbakir a foreign, frontier feeling. The people are predominantly Kurds. The city is famous for its extensive walls - almost 6km long. The present walls date from early Byzantine times (330-500 AD). Locals like to call their city "The Paris of the East" and claim its massive black basalt walls as second only to the Great Wall of China in length, breadth and height.
Van Almost 100km across vast Lake Van from Tatvan lies Van. Van has several claims to fame. It was the Urartian capital city and at the Rock of Van near lakeshore are long cuneiform inscriptions. Van is also the market centre for the Kurdish tribes who live in the mountain fastnesses of extreme south-eastern Turkey. Turkey's largest inland body of water and one of the worlds highest lakes, Lake Van stands some 5500 Ft. above sea level. The city is also famous for its cats, Van cats are pure white in color, each with one blue eye and one green eye.
Agri The turkish name for Mt. Ararat is Agri Dagi, and the town of Agri is 100km west of the snow-capped peak. The mount Ararat, an enormous volcano capped with ice and often shrouded in dark clouds. The name Ararat is dereived from Urartu. The mountain has figured in legends since time began, most notably as the supposed resting place of Noah's Ark.
Nemrut The mighty stone heads of Nemrut Dagi, adorning the temple and tomb of King Antiochus, have become one of the best-known images of eastern Turkey. The summit was formed when a petty megalomaniac pre-Roman king cut two ledges in the rock, filled them with colossal statues of himself and the Gods (his relatives), then ordered an artificial mountain peak of crushed rock 50m high to be piled between them. The King's tomb may well lie beneath those tonnes of rock, nobody knows for sure. Earthquakes have toppled the heads from most of the statues, but many of the colossal bodies sit silently in rows, and the two-meter heads watch from the ground
Harran It seems certain that Harran, now officialy called Altinbasak, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited spots on earth. Now its ruined walls and the Ulu Cami, its crumbling fortress and beehive houses give it a feeling of deep antiquity. Harran's ancient monuments are historically interesting, though not really impressive. It is more the lifestyle of the residents you might find fascinating. They live by farming and smuggling and now await the wealth expected to arrive with the development of the South-east Anatolia Project. Here was the site of the Temple of Sin (erroneously called the first university), famous throughout the ancient world for its stars and savants.
